How Sleep Deprivation Harms Us.
One night of disturbed sleep generally doesn't have any adverse consequences, other than leaving us feeling a bit tired and irritable. It is when the disturbed sleep pattern occurs every night for several nights in a row that we struggle to cope with our daily activities. This regular loss of sleep is referred to as sleep deprivation. Deprivation of sleep causes loss of concentration and poor judgement in our daily activities of life. We laugh when someone tells us that they cleaned their teeth with shaving cream insteadof toothpaste, but it isn't so funny when one of these lapses in concentration occurs at work and results in injury. People who suffer with sleep deprivation are at increased risk of accidental injury at work or when driving or playing sport. Sleep deprived people, because of their poor decision making ability, can also be the cause of injury to others. Repeated loss of sleep causes emotional distress which can lead to depression, anxietydisorders, stress and memory loss. One's physical health can also be compromised, as research has shown. The immune system in sleep deprived persons functions less efficiently, leaving one exposed to a greater risk of contracting colds and flu. It is also believed that sleep deprivation results in slower healing from illness or accidental injury. |
